How to Change Your VAT Address in Luxembourg

Some self-employed people in Luxembourg have their home address registered for VAT (TVA / Mehrwertsteuer) instead of their business address by mistake. This can cause real problems — when your customers or platforms like Amazon check your VAT number on the EU VIES system, the address they see won't match the address on your invoices. This gives them a reason to refuse payment. You can learn more about how this works in our article on how to check a VAT number on VIES.

The fix is straightforward: file an address modification through MyGuichet.lu. It's free and takes about a week.

Why Your VAT Address Matters

Your VAT address is public — anyone can look it up on VIES using your VAT number (numero de TVA / Umsatzsteuer-Identifikationsnummer). If the address in VIES doesn't match the address on your invoices (factures / Rechnungen):

  • Business clients may reject your invoices — EU rules require that VAT details match. A mismatch gives the buyer a reason to refuse the invoice or delay payment.
  • Platforms auto-check — Amazon, for example, validates seller VAT numbers against VIES automatically. If the address doesn't match, your account can be flagged or suspended.
  • Tax audits — inconsistencies between your registered address and invoiced address can raise questions during VAT audits.

This is more common than you'd think. We've seen multiple clients whose home address was still registered for VAT even though they had a separate business address. Check yours now on VIES.

What You Need Before You Start

  • Your VAT number — format: LU + 8 digits (e.g., LU12345678)
  • Your new business address — the address you want registered for VAT
  • Your bureau d'imposition TVA number — the form asks you to select which VAT tax office handles your file (see the table below)
  • A business eSpace (espace professionnel) on MyGuichet.lu — you must file from your business space, not your personal one
  • A LuxTrust product or eID card — required for authentication

Practical tip: Check which bureau d'imposition handles your file BEFORE you start. The form requires you to select it, and choosing the wrong one will delay processing.

Which Bureau d'Imposition Handles Your File?

The AED has multiple VAT tax offices (bureaux d'imposition TVA). Which one handles your file depends on your business type and location — not just your address.

The AED has multiple VAT offices across the country — in Luxembourg City, Diekirch, Esch-sur-Alzette, and elsewhere. Which bureau handles your file depends on your business type, location, and legal form.

The easiest way to find your bureau:

  • Check your previous VAT correspondence — the bureau name and number are printed on every letter from AED
  • Check the official AED directory — the full list of all bureaux d'imposition with addresses and phone numbers is available at pfi.public.lu/fr/support/annuaire.html

Most self-employed sole traders in Luxembourg City and the Mersch area fall under Bureau 1 or 2. If you are a SARL, it's typically Bureau 5. For businesses outside Luxembourg City (Diekirch, Esch-sur-Alzette, etc.), check the AED directory linked above.

How to File (Step by Step)

  1. Go to MyGuichet.lu and log in with your LuxTrust product or eID
  2. Switch to your business eSpace (not your personal space)
  3. Search for "Value added tax - Application for address modification" in the procedures list
  4. Select your bureau d'imposition TVA from the dropdown
  5. Fill in your new address details
  6. Submit the request

Make sure you file from your business eSpace, not your personal one. The procedure is only available in the business space.

After You Submit

  • Paper confirmation — AED will send you a letter confirming the address change
  • Processing time — in our experience, the update takes about 1 week
  • Check VIES afterwards — once you receive the confirmation, verify your VAT number on VIES. We wrote a guide on how to check your VAT number on VIES — follow it to make sure both the contact address and the business address are correct. We've seen cases where these two got mixed up for clients.
  • If it's not updated after a week — contact your bureau d'imposition directly. Find their phone number and email in the AED directory. You can also contact the eTVA helpdesk.

Practical tip: After the change goes through, check your VIES listing carefully. There is a "contact address" and a "business address" field — make sure both are correct. We've seen them get confused. Here is our guide on checking VIES.
